NCIP–CAR bags first place in nat’l hymn writing contest
by Rocky Ngalob

Christmas came early for National Commission on Indigenous Peoples-Mountain Province employee Lilibeth Chapap who won first place on the NCIP Hymn writing contest conducted by the head office in celebration of IP Month in October.

Chapap learned of her feat during the agency’s yearend assessment in San Fabian, Pangasinan where her colleagues broke the news to her.

Her piece is among the eight entries nationwide, which were deliberated on by the NCIP en banc.

NCIP Regional Director Roland Calde lauded Chapap and challenged the employees of the regional agency to also draw motivation from community from which they are serving and to immerse themselves with the IPs.

Chapap is known in Bauko, Mountain Province as a composer. She writes songs in the dialect depicting their daily lives from love, their daily chores, their work to their plights as IPs.

She managed to record and compiled her songs into an album.

“This is my first time to write an English song because I was fond in writing songs in the dialect,” she said.

Chapap is considering writing more songs in English for a wider scope of listeners.

“This is indeed an early Christmas gift not only for me but the for the entire IP community particularly in Cordillera,” Chapap said.

The NCIP Hymn is part of the Multilevel Arts Competition conducted by the NCIP central office in celebration of the annual IP Month. The NCIP hymn contest was opened to all. However, it was only the entry of Chapap that reached the NCIP regional office which eventually represented the CAR in the national competition.

Also among the victors on the national level, who happens to be Cordillerans were, Christina Lida of Baguio City High School and Kristian Ivan Pacursa of Abra. They place 2nd and 3rd, respectively in the poster and photography contest.
