2 more 100–year–old elders honored
by Aileen P. Refuerzo / PIO

Two more centenarians were honored by the city government in separate resolutions approved by the city council last week.

They were Leonila Mailig Abreu of Gen. Emilio F. Aguinaldo-Lower QM barangay who was born on July 15, 1917 and Gabriel Gallardo Abellada Sr. of South Central, Aurora Hill barangay who was born on Feb. 20, 1917.

Abreu hails from Cupang, Bauan, Batangas. She is the youngest among eight children of Bernardino Mailig and Gregoria Macuha. She married Pio Abreu, a trader who engaged in farming which also served as the family’s main source of income.

In 1950, they left Batangas for Baguio hoping for better opportunities and where they eventually became proud stall owners at the Baguio Public Market dry goods section.

After 20 years of being hardworking traders, they managed a wood carving store at Maharlika Livelihood Center but when her husband died in 1995 at the age of 83, she attended to their business full time.

Despite her lack of formal education due to hardships in life, she is a proud mother of 10 who graduated from college and are gainfully employed, helping each other in times of crisis and always observing strong family ties.  Although she is already frail, she is mentally strong. She still remembers the birthdates of her children and other important events in her lifetime.

Her no-meat diet, together with some medications she takes for her hypertension, keeps her healthy.

Abellada, for his part, was born in Naguilian, La Union but grew up in Baguio City.  He is the fifth child in a brood of 11 of Santiago and Graciana Abellada.

After finishing high school, he worked as an auto mechanic and truck driver at Platon Power Corporation in Ambuklao, Bokod, Benguet until his retirement.

He was married to Jacinta Abellada with six children. The couple migrated to the United States in 1982.

Having been granted dual citizenship, Abellada and his second wife, Teodora whom he married in 2001 now live in Hawaii, USA. He comes home to the Philippines on a regular basis.

The all-vegetables and fruits diet keeps him at the peak of his health and for long life.

Both centenarians were recommended for recognition by the City Social Welfare and Development Office under Betty Fangasan.

The resolutions were authored by Councilor Lilia Fariñas.

The centenarians will receive plaques of recognition and copies of the resolution commending them and P20,000, including P5,000 to be given as birthday gift every year. They will be entitled to regular monthly check-up.
