WARM WELCOME -- Baguio Diocese Bishop Victor Bendico was warmly welcomed by Catholic faithful when he celebrated a Eucharistic mass in Acop, Tublay, Benguet on Saturday. Rep. Droves of Catholic faithful flocked to Acop, Tublay, Benguet to be part of the celebration of the Eucharist administered by the newly installed head of the Vicariate of Baguio City and Benguet, the Most Reverend Monsignor Victor B. Bendico.

He received a cheer at the start of his homily when he greeted the crowd in Iloko.

Bendico said that when he was first advised of his transfer to Baguio, it took him two days to come up with a decision. The bishop from Capiz said the only person he knew from Baguio was Rev. Andres M. Cosalan, Jr.

He said he met “Father Andy” at the Pontifical Institute of St. Anselm in Rome when he took up his Doctorate in Sacred Liturgy. The Bishop was happy to discover that Fr. Andy is the brother of Benguet Rep. Ronald Cosalan, who is married to Cara-Viterbo  Cosalan, the daughter of Dr. George H. Viterbo of Capiz, the same doctor who delivered the good bishop.

A program to formally welcome the bishop followed the mass.

The congressman’s wife, who was the first to welcome Bendico, shared she felt the same when she first arrived in Benguet, as she knew no one and did not know how to speak the local language.

But she informed the bishop that she adjusted overtime because the Benguet community was not only peace-loving but also very welcoming to her. She gave the bishop an Ilocano-English dictionary.

Gov. Crecensio Pacalso and the congressman took turns in welcoming the bishop, who graced the various cultural dances performed by students and singers Ingrid Payaket and Glen Gaerlan.

Tublay officials led by Mayor Armand Lauro also welcomed the bishop.

The bishop joined Rev. Berlynden Dao-Anis of the Immaculate Conception of Caponga, Tublay in performing the tayaw.

The activity was a collaboration of the Immaculate Conception Parish of Caponga, Tublay, and Benguet Congressional District Office.

Bendico was born on Jan. 22, 1960 in Roxas City, Capiz. At 24, he was ordained priest of the Archdiocese of Capiz on April 14, 1984. He was appointed on Oct. 1, 2016 and later ordained on Jan. 10 as bishop of Baguio City.
