Tabuk students learn about good nutrition
by Maria Aprila W. Cruz

TABUK CITY, Kalinga – The Department of Health-Cordillera through its Nutrition Program conducted the Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Promotion (NHLP) activities for public school learners in this town to address issues on increasing malnutrition among adolescents and to advocate that proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle affect the development of the learners.

DOH-Cordillera Nutrition Dietitian IV Candice Salingbay said the activity was also aimed to promote good nutrition and healthy lifestyle among adolescents and let them understand the principles of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, nutrition guidelines, correct food myths, and promote activities for healthy lifestyle, like the Go sigla, Go sustansya, Go smoke-free, and Go slow sa tagay

Around 340 grades 7 to 12 learners from Tabuk National High School and Kalinga State University participated in the two-day NHLP that included series of lectures on principles of good nutrition for adolescents, promotion of healthy lifestyle activities, fad diets, STD/HIV, and prevention of teenage pregnancy.

Salingbay said having a healthy lifestyle is not just about eating healthy and exercising. Teenagers may have a lot of things that they are trying to balance such as school or study, friendship/relationships, extra-curricular activities, sports, part-time job, and responsibilities at home.

Based on the Food and Nutrition Research Institute-Department of Science and Technology 2015 National Nutrition Survey, 27.2 percent of pre-adolescence and older children 10 to 19 years old were stunted, 5.5 percent were wasted or thin, and 11.4 percent were overweight.

The Operation Timbang Plus of the Department of Education also showed an increasing prevalence of overweight in Baguio, Benguet, and Kalinga.
