Kalinga gets citations in Rice Achievers Award
by Press release

Kalinga, considered the rice granary of the Cordillera, has reached another achievement.

In the 2018 Rice Achievers Awards awarding ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center last May 30, three entries from the province won awards.

The province received a special citation under the Outstanding Province Category, as one of the Outstanding Provinces in rice production in 2012, 2014, and 2017.

The Babalag Annayop Irrigators Association, Inc. from Rizal, Kalinga won a special award under the Small Water Irrigation System Association Category.

The municipality of Rizal is also one of the recipients of the Outstanding Municipality Award in the 2018 Rice Achievers Awards of the Department of Agriculture.

Rizal received P1 million worth of projects as an incentive.

Rizal is the second rice-producing town of Kalinga. It has 2,957 hectares devoted for rice production.

In 2018, Rizal produced 10,273.50 metric tons of rice for the wet season and 16,701.90 MT for the dry season. It has an average yield of 4.08 MT for the wet season and 5.96 MT for the dry season.

The Rice Achievers Award is bestowed by the DA in partnership with the Agricultural Training Institute to recognize the contribution of local government units to the rice industry.

Sen. Cynthia A. Villar, chair of the Committee on Agriculture, commended the farmers and the LGUs for contributing 19 million MT in 2018.

Villar said the government has various development programs for rice farmers, like the free irrigation system.

The Philippines has around eight million farmers, 3.5 million or 45 percent of whom cultivate rice.

Villar said if the concern on rice farmers is addressed, the problem on poverty in the Philippines will be lessened.

Rizal Municipal Agriculturist Isabelo Dawaton expressed his gratitude for the continuous support of the DA.

Dawaton said this achievement will further motivate the local government and farmers to implement new technologies, try new rice varieties, and use appropriate machineries in farming.
