Parents told not to let kids drive
by Peter A. Balocnit / PIA

TABUK CITY, Kalinga – The inter-agency body composed of various national agencies and local offices called on parents not to allow their minor children to drive vehicles.

The group also asked those at the right age not to drive without a license.

The move came after a series of traffic accidents particularly along the Bulanao-Dagupan provincial road. Police report showed minors were involved in these accidents.

The body agreed information, education and communication is necessary to avoid accidents. Parents and Teachers Associations will also be tapped to adopt policies helpful in preventing traffic accidents.

In Tabuk City alone, 44 cases of vehicular traffic accidents were recorded – three cases of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, 30 cases of reckless imprudence resulting in physical injuries, nine; reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property, and self inflicted from January to March 15.

Last year, the province had 287 traffic accidents and 345 in 2016. Many of these cases involved minors.

Other causes are drivers under the influence of liquor; over speeding; death and injuries caused by motorcycle riders who do not wear protective gears.

The body also recommended for the strict implementation of the “no driver’s license, no driving policy;” the use of helmet and other protective gears; for the DPWH to install road signs, meeting with transport groups, for the Land Transportation Office to deputize the PNP to help in traffic management; and installation of CCTV cameras.
