Ifugao elders welcome DepEd official the indigenous way
by PIA

LAGAWE, Ifugao – The Officer-In-Charge (OIC) Schools Division Superintendent of the province was welcomed in a traditional fashion to be adopted as one of the daughters of Immipugo or Ifugaos.

The Department of Education family through the council of elders has adopted OIC-SDS Benedicta Gamatero as a daughter of Ifugao and conferred her the title Kadangyan, which means rich or elite, and the native name Aguinaya during the conduct of the Indigenous People’s Education in this capital town recently.

Aguinaya, the daughter of Amtalao, was the famous legendary heroine in the Ifugao epic Hudhud noted for her undisputable beauty, wisdom, and leadership.

To complete the adoption, a ceremonial rite was conducted by the elders and adorned Gamatero with Ifugao attires and accessories that only the kadangyan (elite people) can afford.

“We whole-heartedly convey, bestow, and confer to you our indigenous and cultural way of adopting someone to be one among us as a worthy and respected daughter of the Ifugao family of DepEd-Ifugao,” the elders said.

Gamatero assured that she will serve the Ifugao people with honesty and integrity.
