DOT urges Bananue community to preserve culture and place
by Ofelia C. Empian

Despite the changing times, Department of Tourism USec. Alma Rita Jimenez urged residents of Barangay Batad in Banaue, Ifugao to preserve their unique culture which has become a pride of place.

During the agency’s visit to the area, Jimenez said the uniqueness of Batad is one of the reasons why tourists always return to Banaue.

“Let us not change the character of this place. You have a very beautiful place and beautiful people; continue to preserve it for the next generations,” Jimenez said.

She said more tourists now want to experience the culture of the places they are visiting. Batad, she said, has a unique countryside feel that makes the visit to the rice terraces all the more memorable.

Batad is home of one of the clusters of Ifugao Rice Terraces, which are part of the UNESCO world heritage sites in the province.

Recently, DOT launched its beautification project for Barangays Bocos and Batad, which aims to transform these villages and suit it with the earth colors of the rice terraces.

DOT-CAR Director Marie Venus Tan said the project is part of the revival and enhancement of the rice terraces by painting the roofs and walls of houses in the area.

Each home would be painted with viridian green and earth hues that will complement the mountains and the terraces.

Approximately 6,000 square meters of rooftops and 6,000 square meters of walls will be painted in Batad along with 429 houses and structures approximately 15,000 square meters of rooftops at the Bocos barangay.

Provincial Tourism Officer Roscoe Kalaw said they are preparing the households for the painting activities to commence by June.

Banaue Mayor Jerry Dalipog acknowledged the many developments in Banaue that are slowly threatening  the rice terraces. He said they are doing their best to ease the effects of tourism in the area, especially traffic.
