Dengue clustering in 3 CAR provinces noted
by PIO release

The Department of Health-Cordillera reported a 72 percent decrease in dengue fever cases regionwide after it recorded 208 cases during the first four weeks of the year compared with the 759 cases documented during the same period last year.

Data from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) also showed there was only one dengue-related death during the first four weeks compared with three deaths recorded during the same period last year.

The cases were from Benguet with 92 cases or 13 percent increase; Apayao, 36 or 70 percent decrease; Kalinga, 27 or 59 percent decrease; Baguio City, 26 or 7 percent decrease; Abra and Ifugao, four each or 93 percent decrease; Mountain Province, one or 97 percent decrease; and non-Cordillera provinces, 18 or 93 percent decrease.

The RESU noted there were 131 males afflicted with the illness, which is 63 percent of the total number of cases.

The age range of the dengue-afflicted individuals is from 10 months to 84 years old.

Authorities noted clustering of dengue fever cases in Apayao, Benguet, and Kalinga.

Dengue fever used to follow a cyclic trend but has become a year-round illness.

Among the dengue prevention and control measures include the search and destruction of the breeding ground of the dengue-carrying mosquitoes, embracing self-protection measures, seeking early consultations when suffering from two days of continuous fever, and saying no to indiscriminate fogging in the neighborhood.
