Baguio City receives P1 M for retaining nutrition award

Baguio City was conferred the Nutrition Honor Award (NHA) for maintaining its Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (Crown) recognition.

The NHA is given to Crown awardees that have shown outstanding performance in efforts for nutrition improvement.

The city was monitored by an inter-agency national nutrition evaluation team.

The criteria for the NHA are program efficiency and program effectiveness, 55 percent; average barangay score, 40 percent; and interview five percent.

To be conferred the award, the local government unit must obtain 98 percent or above. The NHA is the highest recognition bestowed by the National Nutrition Council.

Baguio City was cited for having one of the lowest prevalence in underweight and for the reduction in the prevalence of stunting from 3.95 to 2.4 percent and wasting from 1.08 to 0.4 percent.

Factors that contributed to the success in the implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action on Nutrition are the people who exerted extraordinary efforts in implementing the program; good leadership and support of the city officials, National Nutrition Council, and Department of Health; institutionalized nutrition program; good partnership and linkages; and financial and legislative support.

Part of the innovations implemented by the city government was the intensified promotion of backyard, community, and school gardening.

One of the highlights of 2018 was the establishment of the City Agriculture Office, which was further intensified with the passage of Ordinance 35 s. 2018 that declared May as Urban Farmers Month; and the Panagyaman, Panagdayaw ti Serbisyo Local wherein loyal workers and Best Performing Barangay Nutrition Committees were recognized and awarded cash.

The conduct of researches, such as the Salt Survey, the Nutrition Status and Prevalence of Palmar Pallor and Anterior Neck Mass in Day Care Children in Baguio City, Demographic and Psychosocial Profile of Teenage Mothers in Baguio City in 2018 and Prevalence of Low Birth Weight and Quality of Antenatal check-up in Baguio City were also among the innovations implemented.

For its feat, the city government received a trophy and P1 million.
