FDA attests deworming tablets distributed by CHSO are safe

The chewable tablets distributed by the City Health Services Office under its deworming program in the different health centers in the city have been declared “safe and potent” by the Food and Drug Administration-Cordillera.

City Health Officer Rowena Galpo, in an advisory, said the FDA-Cordillera analysis result furnished their office on Aug. 22 revealed that the Albendazole 400 mg chewable tablets with batch numbers ALB 852, ALB 899, and ALB 892 which expire on April 2021 “passed the parameters for potency, physical, and visual, disintegration and dissolution tests.”

Galpo said they subjected the deworming medicines, which they received from the Department of Health-Cordillera and distributed to the 16 health centers to FDA test after receiving reports that some of them “contain cloudy and dark spots.”

“To ensure public safety regarding drugs and medicines being dispensed to our clients, we then requested FDA-Cordillera to conduct analysis of all the batches received. Pending result of the analysis, we instructed the district health centers and the barangay nutrition health workers to temporarily stop dispensing the medicines and to return the tablets to the main pharmacy of the HSO to guarantee that no tablets will be dispensed without our permission,” Galpo said.

Now that the medicine had been declared safe, the HSO will resume their deworming program.

“We would like to inform the public that Albendazole 400 mg chewable tablet being distributed for the deworming program is safe and potent. We assure that the HSO will continue to practice pharmcovigilance and provide quality primary health care services to respond to the evolving challenges,” Galpo said.
