Organic gardens in LGUs urged
by Julie G. Fianza / PIO

The Department of the Interior and Local Government recommended for local government units to lead in the establishment of organic gardens in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

DILG Baguio Director Evelyn Trinidad relayed to Mayor Benjamin Magalong National Organic Agriculture Board Resolution (NOAB) 14, s. 2019 and memorandum circular 129 series of 2019 that direct LGUs to ensure a sustainable supply of organic produce and encourage the community to be self-sufficient and resourceful, as provided for in Republic Act 10068 or  the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010.

The Department of Agriculture through its regional office assists LGUs comply with the law by providing technical and production support for the establishment and sustainability of organic school gardens, as counterpart to the backyard, pocket, or other forms of organic gardening.

The NOAB said that these efforts must be done to ensure food security; for environment, health, and wellness; and poverty alleviation.

In Baguio, the city council, through Resolution 75, s. 1994, pushed for the establishment of herbal gardens to be among the sources of alternative medicines.

In 2015, the council again endorsed the practice of backyard gardening in the city to augment the nutritional needs of elders and families.

In June, the city council asked the Agriculture Services Division of the City Veterinarian to prepare an urban agricultural plan, “to assure safe organic food, for safer and healthier supply and to use know-how in ground, rooftop, mushroom growing, aquaponics, and hydroponics.

The council said growing of plants and establishing urban gardens provides exercise, health and wellness, combat climate change, and help mitigate the greenhouse effect.
