BONTOC, Mountain Province – The Department of Science and Technology held the annual Regional S&T Week (RSTW) that aims to promote science, technology, and innovation as a driver of development, especially in the countryside.

With the theme, “Science for the people: Enabling technologies for sustainable development,” the RSTW 2019 involved nine venues and parallel activities. It included S&T exhibit, technology bazaar, DOST-SEI workshop for students, S&T quiz for elementary and secondary schools in the Cordillera, Disaster Resilience Summit for Kids, and the Pagasa mobile planetarium, science magic, and robotics interactive exhibit.

Other activities are the science, technology and innovation forum; “Science JournoAko” (journalism workshop) for high school students; and the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program summit for local business enterprises and future entrepreneurs.

For the first time, the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit were also held simultaneously with the RSTW drawing 105 entries from 19 institutions and 11 private individuals/inventors.

DOST Sec. Fortunato dela Peña, DOST-Cordillera Director Nancy Bantog, and Mountain Province officials headed by Gov. Bonifacio Lacwasan and Rep. Maximo Dalog Jr. opened RSTW 2019 at the Provincial Multi-purpose Hall Tuesday last week.

Dela Peña said promotion of S&T and the creative arts to enhance innovation for inclusive development is among the priority socio-economic agenda of President Rodrigo Duterte.
