by Rimaliza A. Opiña

The Department of Health-Cordillera reported an increase in suspect acute viral hepatitis, suspect dengue, suspect influenza-like illness, and suspect typhoid and paratyphoid cases from Jan. 1 to April 20.

In its disease surveillance report, from 40 in 2018, acute viral hepatitis cases rose to 62 in 2019 or a 55 percent increase and one death.

For suspect dengue cases, the DOH recorded a 67 percent increase from 957 cases in 2018 to 1,681 cases this year. Both years recorded three deaths each.

The DOH also recorded clustering of cases and some towns in Abra, Apayao, Benguet, and Mountain Province, which exceeded the epidemic threshold.

For suspect influenza-like illness, the DOH recorded an 18 percent increase from 3,177 cases in 2018 to 3, 741 cases in 2019.

Suspect typhoid/paratyphoid cases increased by 113 percent from 441 in 2018 to 939 cases this year. The DOH also recorded clustering of cases in Benguet and Kalinga.

These diseases can be prevented by following proper sanitation, observing proper hygiene, maintaining rigorous standards in food preparation, searching and destroying the breeding ground of dengue-carrying mosquitoe and seeking early consultation.
