House body okays cash gift for elders
by Press release

The House Committee on Senior Citizens approved the substitute bill granting cash gifts to senior citizens aged 85, 90, 95, and 100.

Baguio Rep. Mark Go authored House Bill 8208, which seeks to advance the privileges granted to elders before they reach the centenarian age.

Under the bill, elders who reach 85 and 90 years old will be receiving P25,000. Those who reached 95 years old will be given P50,000.

When they reach the centenarian age, they will receive P100,000 and a letter of felicitation from the President congratulating the celebrant for their longevity, as provided under Republic Act 10868 or the Centenarians Act of 2016.

“Let me also clarify that this will not be retroactive and there is no in-between application,” Go said.

The bill proposed that funds for the initial implementation of the law will be allotted from the Department of Social Welfare and Development and subsequent funding shall be from the annual General Appropriations Act.

“It is very rare that people reach the age of 100, and even if they do, they cannot fully enjoy this grant because they are already suffering from different health problems. In the bill, we want to (grant) these privileges to them before they reach 100 for them to feel and appreciate such distinct recognition,” Go said.
