by Marcelo B. Lihgawon / PIA

LAGAWE, Ifugao – The operations of Nutriskwela community radio stations in the country,  including four in the Cordillera, will be enhanced with the knowledge the personnel acquired in the recently concluded 9th National Conference of the Nutriskwela Community Radio Network Program (NCRNP) organized by the National Nutrition Council.

More than 100 delegates from 44 Nutriskwela community radio stations (NCRS) based in Batanes up to Tawi-tawi gathered at the Mansion in Iloilo for three days to discuss updates on nutrition, community broadcasting, to share and discuss practices and concerns in managing and operating radio stations.

Participants from the from the Cordillera are personnel and program makers of Radyo Kiphodan 99.1 FM in Lagawe, Ifugao; Radyo Kabinnulig 99.9 FM in Langilang, Abra; Radyo Kataguwan 97.3 FM in Bauko, Mountain Province; and Radyo Kasalip 96.7 FM in Pasil, Kalinga.

“The foundation of the Nutriskwela program is deeply rooted in the definition of a community radio station as taught to us by our dear friend, the late Ka Louie Tabing, who helped us start Nutriskwela,” Health Asec. and NNC Executive Director Maria-Bernardita T. Flores said.

She noted the significant milestone for the NCRNP that started from five radio stations in 2008 and grew to 45 stations in 2017.

The community radio is operated in the community, for the community, about the community and by the community.

“Let’s always keep this in mind. We are doing all of these for the community, serving the community, involving them, and equipping them toward improved nutrition and development,” Flores said.

The activities on the first day of the conference included the presentation of NCRNP updates, trends in the nutrition status of areas with NCRS, strengthening Nutriskwela radio for development broadcasting, making Nutriskwela more “nutrilicious” by improving programming, and a fellowship night.

Topics for the second day were revisiting roles and responsibilities in Nutriskwela; rules and regulations on radio broadcast; radio broadcast during electoral campaign period, and an observation tour to Radyo Kaabyanan in Sibalom, Antique.

The last day was devoted to live stream broadcast; sharing of good practices, and the 4th NCR awards.
