8 LGUs graduate from DOH-led leadership program for health
by Carlito C. Dar / PIA

The Department of Health has gained more partners in the delivery of responsive health programs and services in rural communities and underserved areas.

Last week, eight local government units graduated from the Municipal Leadership and Governance Program (MLGP), which aims to enhance the capabilities of local chief executives and local health officers towards improving the health situation in their respective towns or municipalities, especially those in geographically isolated and displaced areas. It is a component of the DOH’s Health Leadership and Governance Program (HLGP) initiated by the Zuellig Family Foundation in 2008.

DOH-Cordillera’s training institution partner, Benguet State University headed by President Feliciano Calora Jr., led the presentation and confirmation of the graduates on Sept. 28.

MLGP graduates from Abra are Bucloc Mayor Gybel Cardenas, Municipal Health Officer Everbelle Hidalgo and public health nurse Janina Gayao; Daguioman Mayor Salma Padilla and MHO Reline Gay Apelo; Tineg Mayor Corinthia Crisologo and MHO Severina Ortega; and Tubo Mayor Guilbert Ballangan, MHO Jordan Dongga-as and nurse Loradel Ferrer.

MLGP graduates for Ifugao are Kiangan Mayor Joselito Guyguyon and MHO Cherry Namujhe, and Tinoc Mayor Marcelino Catalino and MHO Jennifer Illustrisimo.

For Kalinga, the graduates are Tanudan Mayor Johnwell Tiggangay and MHOs Sandra Glynn and Sandra Glynn Valledor; and Tinglayan Mayor Sacrament Gumilab and MHO Caren Aite Liw-agan.

DOH Public Health Service Team OIC Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje and DOH-CAR OIC Regional Director Amelita Pangilinan spearheaded the ceremonial handing down of the P100,000 check to each of the LGU health teams for finishing the MLGP training course.

Cabotaje, in her keynote message, expressed the DOH’s congratulations to the graduates as she outlined the importance of leadership and governance in creating healthcare systems that are responsive to the needs of people in their communities.

“This colloquium is a testament to the good results from the HLGP and underscores the importance of developing leaders into health champions in implementing health reforms,” she said.

Cabotaje assured that DOH remains committed in sustaining the partnership with community stakeholders especially with local chief executives.

“Let us continue to work together on the way to a sustainable and effective Philippine health care system,” she enjoined.

With the addition of the eight LGU health teams, there are now 23 MLGP alumni out of the 76 municipalities in the region.
