Camp John Hay now a no‐smoking zone
by PNA

Camp John Hay is now a no-smoking zone.

Stakeholders have agreed to maintain the air quality in the economic zone and ensure the protection of watershed area by committing to free the reservation from smoke.

“Locators have pledged to jointly adopt and implement the President’s (smoke-free) order in John Hay,” said Zaldy Bello, administration department manager of the John Hay Special Economic Zone (JHSEZ).

Bello said the John Hay Management Corporation and the business enterprises in the economic zone signed the smoke-free agreement last month.

The John Hay official said the agreement has three  main provisions: to support President Rodrigo Duterte’s no-smoking drive, maintain clean air inside the camp, and prevent forest fire in the watershed area.

The smoke-free environment covers the JHSEZ with an area of 301 hectares, where locators and establishments operate.

The remaining 625 hectares of the reservation comprises the forested area and serves as Baguio City’s watershed.

In its air quality monitoring report, the Environment Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Cordillera said Camp John Hay continues to enjoy “very good” air quality rating, which it said, is perfect for people’s health.

The EMB added Camp John Hay also has the largest remaining forest cover in Baguio City, thus the need to institute measures for its protection.

The camp’s management, however, designated some smoking areas, and such policy will be enforced by JHMC’s Security Services Department.
