4,691 animal bites recorded
by PIO release

The City Health Services Office (CHSO) record 4,601 animal bites in the city from January to May this year.

Dr. Vanessa Fagcangan, program cluster head of the CHSO’s non-communicable disease section, said most of the cases recorded in the first months this year are dog bites.

Last year, the CHSO recorded 6,953 animal bites, 5,894  of which were dog bites; 1,021 were cat bites; and 28 were caused by other animals.

Fagcangan said that rabies is fatal but is preventable, provided that individuals bitten by animals seek immediate medical attention.

She encouraged residents to have their dogs vaccinated by the City Veterinary Office to help in sustaining the city’s zero rabies status.

When bitten by dogs or other animals, Fagcangan advised individuals to immediately wash the wound with soap and flowing water for at least 10 minutes and go to the nearest health facility for medical attention.

If the dog that had bitten an individual dies within the 14-day observation period, she said the animal’s head must be brought to the Department of Agriculture to check if the dog is rabid so that health workers will be guided on how to treat patient.
