The Luis Hora Memorial Regional Hospital (LHMRH) will soon have its own Psychiatry Center.

The additional facility was inaugura-ted recently together with the blessing of the three ambulances acquired by the hospital.

LHMRH Chief Eduardo Calpito said the three ambulances were worth P1.9 million each. The psychiatry building, which will rise at the Motorpool ground, was programmed at P6.8M.

Dr. Karen Balanza, chief of the Acute Psychiatry Unit, said there is a need to construct a separate department to cater to psychiatry patients.

“Establishing an Acute Psychiatry Unit in LHMRH bridges the gap between the delivery of care to people with mental health conditions and the resources they have. In the end, we (want) to protect their human rights,” she said.

The LHMRH started its psychiatry services in July 2009 focusing primarily on the early detection and prevention of mental health conditions through community psychiatry service which included: mental health advocacy program, identification and early treatment of psychiatric morbidities, stress management and effective parenting lectures. Since then, there was a gradual increase in the number of patients seeking psychiatric help.

Fr. Harry Gawongna, parish priest of our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Bauko, Mountain Province, blessed the three ambulances.

Department of Health Regional Director Amelita M. Pangilinan and Atty. Maximo Y. Dalog, Jr. who represented Legislative Caretaker Allen Jesse C. Mangaoang, attended the event.

Pangilinan commended the leadership of the hospital and staff members for the improvements being undertaken by the lone regional hospital in the Cordillera.

She also urged the public to participate in the campaign to end violence against women and children.

Dalog said the recent signing into law of RA 11104, increasing the bed capacity of the medical center from 100 to 200 beds which was authored by the late Mountain Province representative Maximo B. Dalog, Sr. will bring more quality health servi-ces for the people.

“The increase in bed capacity will also mean upgrading the service facilities and professional health care of LHMRH, which is catering not only to Cordillerans but also to patients from regions 1 and 2. This means that additional plantilla positions of doctors, nurses, and other hospital workforce will be created and filled up by the DOH and the Department of Budget and Management in the near future,” he said.

Dalog also said the office of the congressman will continue supporting and sponsoring measures that will improve the hospital facilities.
