REGREENING BAGUIO -- Members of the different clubs, teacher-advisers, and the Parents Teachers Association of Josefa Cariño Elementary School, together with Upper Rock Quarry officials, planted pine tree saplings at the adopted area of the City Environment and Parks Office along South Drive on weekend as their contribution to the unified efforts to regreen the Summer Capital. -- Susan Marie Bacolong

More than a hundred volunteer blood donors trooped to the La Trinidad municipal gymnasium to help save lives as part of the 2018 National Blood Donor’s Month observance.

The event was organized by the Benguet Blood Council led by the provincial governor’s office and the Provincial Health Office in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross.

Benguet Red Cross Chapter Administrator Oscar Paris said a total of 132 individuals took part in the event held on July 31.

At least a hundred individuals donated blood during the activity, which aims to strengthen and encourage the public to donate blood regularly.

Other walk-in donors joined the event until 3 p.m. that day.

“The laying of 100 beds signifies preparing our community, our institutions to support our campaigns on voluntary blood donations in the province of Benguet. We are now geared towards 100 percent voluntary blood donation and not more on replacement, no paid donors by 2020 that’s why we are now preparing towards that,” Paris said.

He said last year, they reached 80 percent of their target or 3,000 to 3,800 units of blood while this year, PRC Benguet is targeting 4,000 units.

This represents one percent of Benguet’s more than 403,000 population.

“This indicates that we meet one percent, which means there is sufficient blood supply for end users. There would be no patients going around looking for blood donors as this would be available in hospitals and in blood facilities at all times,” he said.

He said the PRC is mandated to have safe quality of blood at all times.

After the event, PRC is targeting more mobile blood donations in all local government units, communities, and organizations with the support of the LGUs and other stakeholders like the business sector.

He said the simultaneous blood donation started in 2012 and this is the second time that a simultaneous blood drive was conducted.

Paris said they plan to make the activity an annual event in observance of the Blood Donor’s Month.
