TABUK CITY, Kalinga – The Provincial Veterinary Office clarified that the reported death of fowls in Battikin, Bulanao this city recently was not caused by bird flu.

Provincial Veterinarian Mariano Dunwan said the death of 89 ducks and chickens in Battikin was caused by ordinary disease plaguing fowls.

He said personnel from the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory have taken 30 blood samples from chicken and ducks in Battikin and brought them to the Philippine Animal Health Center for laboratory examination.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Avian Influenza Task Force has quarantined the province to prevent entry of undocumented shipment of chicken.

The body activated checkpoints in Agbannawag, Mapaoay, and Rizal, which are now supervised by three quarantine officers provided by the Bureau of Animal Industry with the support of the Philippine National Police and concerned local government units.

Kalinga stepped up its monitoring and inspection of poultry products transported to the province when reports of bird flu outbreak in some parts of Central and Northern Luzon middle of this month.

Among the poultry products being inspected in checkpoints are live chicken, dressed chicken, eggs, and other winged fowls.

Veterinary clearances from the source of the supply have been required from all poultry traders to ensure that no infected product enters the province.
