Investors urged to patent works

YOUNG INNOVATORS -- Easter College Grade 12 students Ellen Rose Banglayan and Apple Faith Lapangan, who innovated the “protective energy-saving light control” device for households, win the Outstanding Student Research-SIBOL high school category of the 2017 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits held at the Baguio Convention Center last week. With two other teammates Jiane Erika Narvaza and Hanah Piluden, their research will represent Cordillera in the same category in the national competition. -- Lito Dar

The Department of Science and Technology urged inventors, innovators, and researchers to patent and pursue the commercialization of their works.

DOST-Technology Application and Promotion Institute Director Edgar Garcia said the government believes that science and technology and innovations are the key drivers of development as they contribute to the competitiveness index of the country, especially if these are registered or patented through the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPhil).

Garcia was in Baguio City for the opening of the 2017 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE).

He said the DOST-TAPI is providing technical and financial assistance in getting the work of inventors patented or registered at IPOPHil.

He added that the RICE is conducted in the different regions to highlight the role of Filipino inventors and increase awareness on the value of S&T and innovation on the socio-economic growth of every Filipino family and community, especially in the countryside.

The RICE for the Cordillera held last week drew 51 contestants. Of the entries, 13 were under the Utility Model Research category, six were under the Creative Research, and 19 are under the Outstanding Student Creative Research (Sibol) High School category and 13 for Sibol college category.

The winning entries in each of the RICE categories will represent the region in the National Invention Contest and Exhibits next year.
