People in risky areas urged to put safety first
by PIA

The Department of Social Welfare and Development is reminding Cordillera communities especially those in mountainous areas and water tributaries to prioritize safety and preparedness with the rainy season in.

Given the unique topography of the region where there is a high risk of landslides in upland communities and flash floods in low-lying areas, DSWD Regional Director Janet Armas stressed that safety and preparedness is everyone’s concern.

With disaster risk reduction and management preparations of the government, Armas assured DSWD’s readiness for response operations on any emergency that the rainy season may bring.

Armas reported that food packs and non-food items are already on standby at the DSWD-CAR and family packs are already prepositioned in Abra, Apayao, Ifugao, Kalinga and Mountain Province.

For Benguet, emergency/disaster relief and augmentation supply will be covered by the DSWD-CAR in Baguio because of its proximity, Armas said.

The family food packs contain rice, sardines, and noodles. Other food items on standby are brown rice bar (a ready- to-eat energy food), infant cereal snack, and sachets of instant coffee.

DSWD- CAR also has a standby fund of around P30 million for disaster relief and response operations.

Armas also reported that the DSWD is currently completing the release of Shelter Assistance Program to victims of Super Typhoon Lawin last year.
