Kapangan improves IEC to entice more blood donors
by PIA–Benguet

KAPANGAN, Benguet – The local government’s intensified information campaign on the benefits of donating blood has helped increase the number of donors.

Mayor Manny Fermin said the town reorganized the first Local Health Board and met frequently to discuss the low turn-out of blood donors and to find ways to increase their number.

One of the strategies is the enhanced information education at the barangay level and during flag-raising ceremonies.

This is complemented by barangay health workers distributing localized information, education, and communication  materials that can be understood by the residents.

They also engage various sectors such as jeepney operators, religious groups, and the youth to erase the misconceptions about blood extraction. It is stressed that blood donation is a healthy undertaking as it helps improve cardiovascular health and reduces obesity. It also helps in reducing the risk or damage to liver and pancreas and maintains the iron level in the body linked to low cancer risk.

Local health boards are also organized at the barangay levels and the local government unit allotted P5,000 per barangay.

Fermin cited the partnership of the LGU with concerned agencies and organizations such as the Department of Education, the Philippine Red Cross-Benguet as and nursing students of the Saint Louis University and the University of the Cordilleras in strengthening the advocacy on blood donation.

Aside from food given after bloodletting, tokens are given to the blood donors.

Fermin is hopeful that they will be able to sustain what they are doing to save more lives.
