A battle-tested police officer,  who is a proud son of Besao, Mountain Province, has just been promoted to the rank of senior superintendent (full-fledged colonel in the military), becoming the highest-ranking member of the Philippine National Police Academy Class of 1998.

Also, S/Supt. Jonathan Calixto just took his oath as the new head of the commander of the PNP Regional Highway Patrol Unit of Region4A effective Oct. 9.

The 46-year-old Calixto was the head of the PNP-Highway Patrol Group Special Operations Division/Task Force Limbas, a unit tasked to go after syndicated crime groups involved in car theft nationwide.

Calixto also made history for members of PNPA Class 1998 for being meritoriously promoted twice, first in 2004 to chief inspector (major) and to police superintendent (lieutenant colonel in the military) in 2007 for bravery and heroism in several anti-terrorism and anti-criminality operations.

He will retire from police service in 2028 when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56.

At age 36 or 10 years ago, Calixto, known as “Kudyam” in his native village, was the youngest battalion commander of the PNP Special Action Force.

Calixto, along with Igorot PNP-SAF commando leaders such as Supt. Lambert Suerte, led police commandos in the assault of terrorists who held hostages at the Bicutan jail resulting in the death of more than 20 Abu Sayyaf prisoners and recovery of high-powered firearms.

As a battle-tested police officer with vast experience in operation and intelligence, Calixto also led the capture of the second-in-command of Jemaah Islamiyah, a militant Islamist group active in several Southeast Asian countries, including  the Philippines in southern Mindanao.

In 2008, Calixto led 10 police officers who were conferred the coveted Country’s Outstanding Policemen in Service by the Metrobank Foundation for his contribution to the nation’s peace and stability through anti-terror campaign.

Before he entered the PNPA, Calixto graduated at the University of Baguio with degreee of Bachelor of Science in Criminology. He also holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from the National College for Business and Arts.

He also studied abroad such as the French counter-terrorist program and advance courses in anti-kidnapping and crisis response at the Louisiana State Police Academy in the United States.

In wake of the Mamasapano massacre that led to the death of 44 PNP-SAF commandos, Calixto, who was then the commander of the Benguet Police Provincial Safety Company, came to pay one of the most remembered tributes for the fallen heroes.

“It runs in the blood of Igo-rots to defend our land and freedom. We will fight until the last breath and die with honor in the name of service,” Calixto said.
