Four of 128 city villages are drug-free since 2016
by Harley F. Palangchao and Charlene Favis

Only four out of the 128 barangays in Baguio remained drug-free since the Duterte government waged the war on drugs in 2016, while 98 other barangays were recently cleared from illegal drugs.

Reports from the Baguio City Police Office showed that Barangays Country Club Village, Upper Dagsian, Happy Hallow, and Lower General Luna are categorized as “unaffected” barangays.

This means that concerned BCPO police stations that have jurisdiction over these four barangays have not reported illegal drug activities in these villages.

BCPO also reported that 98 barangays with previous history of illegal drugs trade were recently cleared by concerned law enforcement and anti-narcotics offices.

However, of the 98 barangays, police reported that illegal drug activities were monitored again in 21 barangays, reason why BCPO and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency are exerting extra effort in monitoring these barangays.

On the other hand, five barangays, namely Quirino Hill, Middle Pinget, Aurora Hill Proper particularly Malvar-Sgt. Floresca area, Irisan, and Bakakeng Central are undergoing drug-clearing operations.

Lower Magsaysay and Lopez Jaena are under tight watch after the PDEA central office reported recently that two barangay officials from these two barangays were in the list of narco-politicians.

BCPO Director S/Supt. Ramil Saculles reported that 347 individuals in Baguio were arrested for illegal drugs since the Duterte government launched the war on drugs in 2016.

Saculles added that more than 2,000 pushers and 367 users likewise surrendered to the authorities since 2016.

BCPO and PDEA also seized close to P3 million worth of marijuana and shabu from the more than 220 illegal drug operations, mostly through buy-bust.

One of the significant accomplishments of BCPO in the war on drugs was the arrest last year of a jail guard in a buy-bust operation in Session Road.

A Baguio court recently sentenced Jail Officer 3 Donald Kelly Jr. with two terms of life imprisonment and was ordered to pay P900,000 after he was found guilty of transacting shabu with an undercover police in an entrapment operation September last year.
