7 ex-drug users find new life in boxing
by Harley F. Palangchao

Four of seven former drug users emerged victorious against their respective opponents in the curtain raiser of the “Boxing at the park: Laban sa pagbabago” last week.

PO2 Eric Dela Cruz of Baguio City Police Station 1 won by technical knockout in round 2 of the main event against Roldan Lingbawan.

Before joining the police force, Dela Cruz was a bronze medalist in the 2005 National Boxing Open and a gold medalist in the 2004 Regional Invitational Boxing Tournament and Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League.

His opponent has six wins and one loss as a pro-amateur boxer.

In the curtain raiser, Aldaniel Santos, a 22 year-old former drug user who represented BCPO Station 2, won via decision against Reniel Garcia.

Ramund Marrero, 25, who represented BCPO Station 3, easily disposed Jake Frank for a win while Jeremy Ayengan, 20, who represented BCPO Station 1, pounded Lorden Bugtog for a win.

Jerryloyd Peñaranda, 26, who represented BCPO Station 8 was too much for Jay Delfin, also in the undercard match.

Meanwhile, Kerubin Sungay won via unanimous decision against Mark Autida while Carl Jeffrey Basil, who has six wins and one loss in his young career, won against Jones Catalino.

Philippine National Games Marty Odasing turned victorious against Michael Rimando while two-time kickboxing gold medalist Mitsel Mike Chumawar won against Bryan Aban.

In the supporting bout, PO3 Bernard Dumar won against SPO2 Richard Mendoza while Binky Falitnang disposed Noel Gullod.

The crowd got electrified when Fernando Ansong and Jesson George Domogen, who both represented BCPO, traded blows that ended in a draw.

Two-time Muay Thai gold medalist and 16-year-old Cazzel Gatinao won against Shaira Tolmod in the lone female bout of the event, which is an official part of the 108th Baguio Charter Day celebrations.

S/Supt. Ramil Saculles, BCPO director, said the overwhelming support displayed by the athletes and their coaches and the city government and sponsors made his office consider another boxing event in the future.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan who witnessed some of the featured bouts called for the institutionalization of the event, saying Baguio might soon discover the next “Manny Pacquio of the north.”

He commended BCPO for staging the event that elevated the government’s war on drugs.
