Garbage during holidays increases
by PIO release

The volume of garbage generated during the holidays has increased.

General Services Officer Eugene Buyucan said from the usual 170 tons of residual waste during normal days, the amount of garbage increased to over 200 tons daily from Dec. 21 up to Dec. 30, 2019.

Buyucan said this compelled GSO personnel and volunteers to work double time to ensure collection of residual waste in the barangays.

He said the city government also requested the operator of the sanitary landfill in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan to make sure the facility will be open during the holidays to accommodate the city so that garbage will not pile up at the waste transfer station at Marcos Highway.

“We had to exert extra effort to ensure that the wastes in the different barangays will be collected despite the significant increase in the volume of the garbage produced by residents and tourists alike,” Buyucan said.

He admitted there were delays in the collection because of the traffic that delayed the return of garbage trucks from the waste transfer station to the pickup points.

Buyucan said collection of garbage in the barangays started to normalize last Dec. 31 as the number of visitors during the Yuletide break started to decrease.

He asked for the residents’ understanding for the delays in collection.

Buyucan said on Dec. 24 and 25, 2019 garbage collection trucks had to return to the barangays at least four times to ensure that all wastes are collected.
