Various universities in the Cordillera simultaneously launched different projects  funded by the Department of Science and Technology on May 3.

DOST Sec. Fortunato de la Peña spearheaded the soft launch of the different facilities and projects assisted by the agency with its partner schools such as the Benguet State University, Saint Louis University, University of the Cordilleras, and the University of the Philippines Baguio.

First off is the Tuklas Lunas Development Consortium in the Cordillera, which aims to develop and strengthen research collaboration and enhance the capacity of the research institutions in the region.

The collaborating schools are project-leader UP Baguio, BSU, and SLU, with the consortium implementing a total of six projects.

DOST-Cordillera Director Nancy Bantog said the Tuklas Lunas consortium primarily targets to use the indigenous and endemic plants in the region as possible drugs beneficial to the community.

“The ultimate goal is for the plants within the community to formulated into drugs or medicines,” Bantog said.

Another project launched was the UC Innovation and Nurturing Space, which is a facility for information technology startups out of researches of students that may be useful to the community.

The UC Innovation and Nurturing Space has 11 incubatees, which includes the automated reconstruction crime scene tool (AReCST), an application that can assemble gathered forensic evidence and artifacts to simulate a realistic crime scene as well as the “Soteria,” which is a drone-based reporting tool for mobile devices designed for barangays that will aid officials in real-time monitoring of their respective areas.

Also launched with the DOST secretary was the SLU Incubator for Research, Innovation, and Business or SIRIB center.

The center is one of the first five Philippine techno hubs in the country that would help in the development of a regional laboratory for technical and prototyping support for startups, students, faculty, community and the various micro, small, medium enterprises in the region.

De la Peña urged the various research and innovation stakeholders to continue researching for technological means, especially in aiding in the disaster risk reduction management of the community and helping in national security by developing useful technologies.
