Bokod youth hike for 10 hours for Mount Pulag cleanup drive
by Press release

Forty youths from Bokod, Benguet joined a summer activity that bannered the theme, “Save the Earth drive: Take a hike and clean as you come home” at Mt. Pulag, Kabayan, Benguet on May 3 and 4.

The project aimed to encourage the youth to be part of community deve-lopment through an enjoyable yet meaningful activity, said activity organizer Jobelle Batanes.

“We tapped different offices and individuals and offered free hike to Mt. Pulag. In exchange, they have to pick up garbage along the way,” she added.

The participants started hiking at 1 a.m. from the ranger station and reached the summit at 5 a.m. to witness the magnificent sunrise and the breathtaking view of the sea of clouds.

The team then walked back to the ranger station and started the cleanup drive.

“It was a great challenge for us. We first thought that we will just pick up garbage until the ranger’s station but we were encouraged to continue until Palansa,” said Whyda Gosgos, a youth from Bila, Bokod.

The ranger station to Palansa is two hours hike, thus, most of the youths walked for a total of 10 hours.

“When we arrived at the ranger station, we were all tired because of lack of sleep and the heat of the sun was getting warmer,” Denry Mines of Ambuklao said.

“But I and the other youths from our barangay continued the cleanup drive until Palansa while the others rested along the way,” he added.

“This activity made us realize the importance of giving back to the community,” Jovin Pul-oc of Nawal said, adding that they collected 15 sacks of garbage.

The activity was sponsored by Mayor Thomas Wales, Jr. and Dr. Cosme Galasgas Jr. and coordina-ted by Jomar Sison, Richelle Dayagan, and Joan Anselmo.

Dr. Lilian Velasco of the rural health unit and Dr. Vivian Dunuan of DMDH also extended free medical services to the participants.
