Baguio receives 22 proposals on solid waste disposal technology
by PIO release

Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan said that the local government received 22 proposals from different companies for the use of the latest technology in addressing its solid waste disposal woes.

However, Domogan said that while the latest technology is being evaluated, the local government is currently looking for a suitable area where an integrated solid waste disposal facility that incorporate a multi-approach for the purpose can be put up.

“The selection of a suitable land area for the put-up of the integrated solid waste disposal facility and the appropriate technology that will be used for the facility is not as easy as picking apples, since this has to pass through stringent processes pursuant to the rules and regulations imposed by concerned government regulatory agencies,” Domogan said.

Included in the local government’s plan is the centralized materials recovery facility, anaerobic digester, waste-to-energy plant, Environmental Recycling System (ERS) machines, special waste treatment plant, and hazardous and toxic waste treatment plant.

Domogan said the local government is setting its sights on the 29 hectares in Itogon, Benguet that was ceded to the city by Benguet Corporation as the possible area for the integrated solid waste disposal facility, which could also  cater to the solid waste disposal requirements of other towns in Benguet, particularly La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba, and Tublay.

He said one of the problems encountered by the local government in finding a permanent solution to the city’s garbage disposal woes is the absence of a land area.

He said what could be done at the moment is the hauling of generated residual waste to the sanitary landfill in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan while efforts are being done to compel the residents to strictly adhere to the segregation of waste at source.

Domogan said that the local government has never been remiss in doing its job of solving the city’s waste problem.

The local government attempted to purchase a land in Sablan, Benguet for the purpose but the area did not pass the standards of the National Solid Waste Commission.

The city also went to Burgos or Rosario, La Union where there were identified suitable lands but the province has an ordinance prohibiting the disposal of garbage from areas outside La Union.
