School advised to form own responders team
by Ma Teresa B. Beñas / PIA

PEÑARRUBIA, Abra – The Peñarrubia Integrated School (PIS) was advised to organize and train its responders’ team to boost the school’s readiness and response to earthquakes.

During the First Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED), Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council observers noted that while the drill was undertaken successfully in the school which was the pilot area, some areas need improvement.

Among these are the proper extraction and handling of casualties, tagging of casualties to determine priorities for evacuation and treatment and the inspection of buildings to declare when it is safe to go back to the building.

The observers told Principal Enrile B. Balais that these gaps can be better addressed with a trained school-based responders’ team. The trained group will also be able to operate independently in case of emergencies.

The PDRRMC members, particularly the Philippine Red Cross and the Bureau of Fire Protection together with the Municipal DRRM Office of Peñarrubia expressed willingness to conduct the training for the PIS responders’ team.

The PIS is the first integrated school established by the Department of Education in Abra. It has a population of 751.

Balais thanked the PDRRMC for choosing the school as the venue for this year’s first quarter NSED and Mayor Jane Mamsaang-Cecilia for providing logistic support to the activity.
