No formal ban on tree cutting in city – DENR
by PIO release

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera said that there is no formal order or memorandum that imposes a ban on the cutting of trees in the city.

DENR-Cordillera Executive Director Ralph Pablo told the city council that the pronouncement of Environment Sec. Roy Cimatu in February was only on the inventory of trees in Baguio.

He said the secretary has not issued an order imposing a ban on the cutting of trees.

Pablo said this shows that the cutting of trees in the city will have to pass through the appropriate processes required under existing rules and regulations.

“We never delayed the issuance of tree cutting permits to applicants but we have to subject their applications to the processes prescribed under existing orders. We can issue the permit within one week from the date it was applied for,” Pablo said.

He said it is illogical for the agency and the local government to delay the issuance of the tree cutting permit for dead trees.

He added that the requirements for the cutting of trees to be issued by a local chief executive are similar to those requested by the regional agency.

Pablo said that applicants are either mandated to plant replacement for the trees to be cut or they could turn them over to the agency so the latter could distribute the same to organizations and individuals participating in the government’s regreening program.

Pablo said the trees that are turned over to their office as replacement are planted in public places.
