Baguio joins World Bike Day
by Joseph B. Zambrano / PIA

More than 500 riders gathered at Burnham Park during the observance of World Bicycle Day in the city last week.

The bikers enjoyed a ride around the central business district and city outskirts to drum up awareness on maintaining clean air as well as promoting good health.

The United Nations has declared June 3 as World Bicycle Day, which recognizes the uniqueness, longevity, and versatility of the bicycle which has been in use for two centuries as a simple, affordable, reliable, clean, and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.

In support of the declaration, the city council has passed a resolution adopting June 3 as the city’s Bicycle Day.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan, in his inspiration talk to the bikers, emphasized the importance of clean living and staying away from alcohol and use of illegal drugs.

“Everybody should promote and encourage people to be involved in sports and have a healthy lifestyle,” Domogan said.

Danny Realin, a senior citizen and a member of Lakay Bikers, said riding his bike regularly keeps him young and fit.

It is also one way of relieving stress and enjoying the sceneries in the city.

He said biking to work is fun and cycling to work can actually transform one’s daily commute into a moderate form of therapy.
