CEPMO plants bonsai saplings on street islands, 5 city parks
by Gaby B. Keith / PIO

Personnel of the City Environment and Parks Management Office (Cepmo) under Ruben Cervantes have planted around 130 bonsai pine tree saplings on street islands located in various areas of Baguio, including Upper and Lower Session Road.

Cervantes said the tree planting is in line with the city government’s continuing environmental and beautification campaign and in pursuance of the Duterte administration’s National Greening Program.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong has also made environmental protection and regreening of the city among his core priorities and part of his 10-point agenda in achieving a “better Baguio” for everyone.

Cepmo staff member Floro Bastian said the bonsai pine saplings were also planted at Wright Park, Burnham Park, and Valenzuela Park and at the vicinity of the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center rotunda and Pacdal Circle.

Bastian said that his office will wait for the saplings to establish their roots first, most probably after the rainy season, then proceed to shape and trim the bonsai pine trees.

Earlier, he said that several onlookers asked him why they planted pine trees at the street islands when they would grow someday and that their roots and bulk may not be contained within the narrow street islands.

Bastian said that what they planted were bonsai pine saplings that could be trimmed and shaped and would remain much smaller than normal pine trees even when they are fully grown.

At least 50 Cepmo personnel underwent extensive bonsai cultivation training under several Japanese experts for several weeks last year in the city’s nurseries.
