LT needs additional P3.5 M to haul waste to Urdaneta
by Jane B. Cadalig

La Trinidad, Benguet has joined Baguio City in hauling its residual wastes to Urdaneta City, Pangasinan.

The move needs an additional budget of P3.5 million, of which P2.5 M will be for the payment of tipping fees and P1 M for fuel costs of the town’s garbage trucks. The amount will be sourced from the town’s supplemental budget.

Mayor Romeo Salda said the town has delivered 28 tons of residual wastes to Urdaneta on Sept. 3 at a cost of P640 per ton. The volume is the average daily residual wastes generated by the 16 barangays.

The capital town has resorted to hauling its wastes to Urdaneta after cell three of its landfill at Sitio Induyan, Barangay Alno has reached its maximum capacity.

Salda said the town projected that cell three will be able to accommodate the town’s residual garbage until December, in time for the completion of the compartment’s expansion.

Salda however said that while expansion works for cell three are ongoing, old wastes that have been dumped when the Alno landfill was being constructed in the early 2000’s has been discovered.

He said the wastes were eventually contained at cell three, which filled the compartment, leaving the town no option but haul out its wastes.

“We will haul out until the expansion of cell number three shall have been completed by December,” Salda said.

He said the municipal government would purchase two additional garbage trucks, a 10-wheeler and a six-wheeler, to be used in hauling out the town’s wastes. The town has allotted P1.5M for the purchase of the two trucks.

Salda said the local government has also allotted in the supplemental budget P400,000 as subsidy to the barangays in the implementation of their solid waste management programs.
