New tourism trail thru Bauko, Sagada to be launched in June
by Ofelia C. Empian

Nature lovers are up for another adventure, as a new tourism trail going through Bauko and Sagada in Mountain Province will be discovered from June 10 to 12.

Known as Kalimbatawa-Balangagan traverse, the two-day trek will feature camping, mountain hiking, river tracing, non-technical canyoneering, and spelunking.

It is organized by the Association of Southern Sagada Environmental Tour Guides, Abante Bauko Tour Guides Association,  and Bauko Municipal Tourism Office in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross- Mountain Province.

“The traverse retraces the historic Spanish Trail from Otucan, Bauko to southern Sagada passing through villages and magnificent landscapes,” the organizers said.

Bauko Municipal Tourism Officer Arsenia Addon said the first leg of the trek will start at the Kalimbatawa Eco-Cultural Tourism Park in Barangay Otucan going to Mount Polis via the old Spanish Trail.

The second stage will be from Mt. Polis’ peak to Bangadan River in Barangay Taccong, Sagada and downstream before turning northward to Uowa Canyon up to the entrance of Balangagan Cave.

Participants will have to prepare for spelunking at the cave’s circuitous and narrow passages, climbing steep rocks to the roadside at Montana Inn, before  walking through to Karran-wigid Campsite to take their needed rest and  for a cultural exchange program.

The event will start in the afternoon of June 10, where participants will converge at Kalimbatawa Eco-Cultural Tourism Park and spend the night in the campsite.

On June 12, participants may coordinate with the organizers if they wish to visit the Blue Soil or Kaman-utek iin Bontoc.

Addon reminded interested trekkers to bring tent, extra clothes, jacket, flashlight, water, toiletries, and trekking shoes, trail food, personal medications, and a waiver.

Registration is ongoing with fees at P1,150 per participant inclusive of all environmental and entrance fees, t-shirt, tour guides, tour coordinators, camping fees, one year accident insurance coverage, certificate, and welcome dinner.

Those who want to spend the night at homestays/inns in Taccong, Sagada on June 11 may coordinate with the organizers earlier or make reservations at the following: Montana Inn, Blue Mountain Cabins, Madoto Homestay, Blue House, Edwin’s Place, and Messy Transient.
