DENR all set for Fire Month
by Press release

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-CAR is all set for the dry season.

In a memorandum, DENR Regional Executive Director Ralph C. Pablo directed all provincial environment and natural resources officers in the region to activate their respective firefighting brigades.

Pablo also enjoined the Penros to involve the community, especially members of peoples organizations, who are under contract under the National Greening Program, Integrated Natural Resources Management program, Community Based Forest Management Program, Forest Management program and all other DENR partners.

Records of the DENR show that 792.22 hectares of forest was damaged by fire in the entire region in 2017. Of this, 737.19 hectares are plantation forests and 55.03 hectares account for natural forest. Estimated damage was pegged at P7,548,010.08.

The damage for is 2017 is 30 percent lower compared to 2016, but Pablo said this could have been lower considering the number of personnel stationed in the different plantation and natural forests.

Pablo said fire should have been suppressed before it spreads and compound the damages.

“Counting the damages caused by forest fire adds nothing in our reforestation efforts,” Pablo said.

Meanwhile, the DENR Enforcement Division distributed firefighting equipment as early as the last quarter of 2017 in anticipation of an early emergence of the dry season in CAR.

Brush cutters and firefighting expandable backpacks together with a complete set of firefighting equipment tool set were distributed as early as Oct. 23, 2017 to the different DENR-CAR field offices.
