Trial carless Monday in City Hall okayed
by PIO release

The city council approved the conduct of a carless Monday at the City Hall on an experimental basis prior to the implementation of carless days in other major roads in the central business district.

The experimental carless Monday at City Hall will be on the fourth Monday of August to observe the compliance of local officials and employees to the policy before deciding on expanding the coverage of the proposed carless day to other major roads in the city.

The proposal to conduct the carless Monday on an experimental basis stemmed from the proposed ordinance of Councilor Elaine D. Sembrano allowing the conduct of a carless day in all roads around the city to help in efforts to preserve and protect the city’s environment.

Sembrano proposed that the carless Friday will be implemented in all government offices in the city, but Councilor Maria Mylen Victoria G. Yaranon proposed that it will be implemented on a Monday so that all local officials and employees will be covered since only a few councilors report to their offices on Fridays.

During the implementation of the carless Monday, no private and public vehicles will be parked in the parking areas of City Hall and its premises.

The city council asserted that it must be made sure that local officials and employees will adhere to the conduct of the carless Monday so that it will be easier for the public to be convinced and comply once the ordinance is approved.

Under the proposed ordinance, local officials and employees can use their vehicles from their residences to the central business district but they will not be allowed to park their vehicles in their designated parking slots at City Hall.

Among the institutions that are implementing carless days in the city include the University of the Philippines Baguio every Wednesday and the offices of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Environment Management Bureau in Gibraltar every Thursday.
