Experts trained on DRRM

The Office of Civil Defense Cordillera continues to provide capacity building programs on disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) to different sectors of the community.

Teachers, engineers, and school DRRM coordinators underwent a three-day DRRM training course in Baguio City that the OCD-CAR organized from July 3 to 5.

The training aimed to instill disaster preparedness to different sectors specifically to teachers and engineers.

“Each and every one of us has the mission to prepare ourselves against any hazard. Disasters are the new normal; hence we must be serious when it comes to implementing DRRM programs,” Melchito Castro of OCD Cordillera said.

Ricelene Sacayanan, school DRRM coordinator from Magsaysay Elementary School, said the training made them realize the importance of being disaster resilient and being an example of a responsible adult that children look up to in schools.

“This endeavor is very important especially for us who work in schools; it is an opportunity for us to create and organize a system that is appropriate to use by the education sector in cases of emergencies,” she added.

Other sectors like women and indigenous peoples are set to undergo the same training, which includes topics on the enabling law of DRRM, hydro-meteorological and geological hazards, and some basic disaster preparedness tips.
