Water bird census indicates good ecosystem in Ifugao town
by PIA–Ifugao

ALFONSO LISTA, Ifugao – The large population of water birds in the wetlands of this town indicates a rich biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem.

This is the assessment of an official of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera during the annual Asian Water bird Census held at the Maris and Magat wetlands here.

“We have a rich biodiversity where these birds can thrive. We must conserve the wetlands and protect the water birds to maintain a good ecosystem because a good ecosystem contributes to a balanced environment,” said DENR Senior Systems Management Specialist Claire Pawid.

This year’s count at Site 1-Maris wetlands at Sito Minanga in Barangay Sto. Domingo listed 6,541 egrets, two great egrets, and 311 Philippine ducks; 91 herons at Site 2 Magat Dam spillway; and 600 Philippine ducks and 140 egrets at Site 2-Magat wetlands.

The Asian Water bird Census is part of a global water bird monitoring program, the International Water bird Census, coordinated by the Wetlands International with the objectives of obtaining information of water bird population in an annual basis, monitor the status and condition of wetlands and encourage greater interest among people in the conservation of wetlands and protection of water birds.

The Maris and Magat wetlands are home to migratory birds that pass the region following the East Asia-Australasian Flyways when they escape the winter season in the countries where they come from like Japan, China, and Taiwan. The same flyways are also taken by birds moving from Vietnam, Malaysia, and Australia.

Mayor Glenn Prudenciano acknowledged that local ordinances and policies on anti-hunting of wild life and anti-illegal fishing have regulated the activities of the people and they are now partners in guarding the biodiversity for a healthy environment.

“We hope that our continued information campaign and strict implementation of said ordinances will lead to complete and solid compliance national and national laws so that we will be able to safeguard our environment which is the very foundation of our physical life,” the mayor said.
