Tuba vows strict monitoring of city’s waste transfer area
by Cherry Sooc

The municipal government of Tuba vowed it will closely monitor the operations of Baguio City’s garbage transfer station at the Dairy Farm in Dontogan barangay.

Mayor Ignacio Rivera said the town will make sure that the city complies to the “No touchdown” policy in the transfer of garbage from the city’s dump trucks to the vehicles that will deliver the wastes to the sanitary landfill in Urdaneta, Pangasinan.

Rivera added that government agencies such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera and Environmental Management Bureau must also monitor and make sure that the provisions regarding the temporary transfer of garbage to Tuba are followed.

He said that Tuba will immediately notify government agencies concerned once problems arise especially during the rainy season.

“If it produces foul odor and if it rains and the (leacheate) flows to the river, that’s a violation. So it is not only us that should monitor but also the DENR and other government agencies concerned,” he said.

Rivera admitted that DENR has also sent the municipal government to help in maintaining the garbage staging area.

Tuba officials identified Taloy Sur as the town’s garbage staging area, but this has yet to be approved by the EMB.

Baguio’s waste staging area is located near the town’s Barangay Upper Poblacion along Marcos Highway, which affected residents of the town earlier opposed.
