P800,000 worth of illegal lumber seized in Tabuk City, 2 arrested
by DENR release

HOT LUMBER -- A total of 1,233 pieces of lumber were recovered on April 8 in a house compound in Ubbog, Magsaysay in Tabuk City, Kalinga by Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Kalinga and police personnel. A total of 1,233 pieces of lumber were apprehended on April 6 in a house compound in Tabuk City, Kalinga.

The lumber, which have a total volume of 17,848.16 board feet and with an estimated value of P803,167.50, were confiscated from the house allegedly owned by Eric Julian and Rex Sap-ay, residents of Ubbog, Magsaysay, Tabuk City. Both were arrested and are presently detained at the Tabuk City Jail, facing criminal charges filed before the Office of the City Prosecutor.

The forest products have been deposited at the Community Environment and Natural Resources-Tabuk for further administrative and criminal action for being a subject of violation of Section 78 of Presidential Decree 705 or the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines.

The apprehension has been accomplished through the joint efforts of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Kalinga personnel together with the members of the Kalinga Provincial Police Office. It was pursued by virtue of a search warrant issued by the Municipal Trial Court in Cities Tabuk.

DENR-Cenro Tabuk personnel assisted by forest guards inventoried and scaled the lumber that were piled at a lumber yard owned by the suspects.

The hauling took four days, with the help of the city government of Tabuk which provided a 10-wheeler truck and a boom truck from the motorpool and City Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Committee, along with two 6 x 6 vehicles of the 503rd Infantry Brigade Philippine Army stationed at Calanan, Bulanao, Tabuk City.
