Anti–logging drive enhanced
by Rubelyn Gernale and Beatrisha Iglesia

Frequent abandonment of logs in forested areas in their town has alarmed residents and officials of Bokod, Benguet.

Mayor Thomas Wales Jr. said the local government intensified its efforts to thwart illegal logging activities, which threaten the preservation of the Upper Agno Watershed.

Bokod Police Chief Vincent Tamid-ay said they have been instituted to apprehend illegal loggers.

Aside from the regular forest patrols, police checkpoints are also set up at the Nueva Vizcaya Road and in other possible routes of illegal loggers.

He said cutting of trees was lessened since January because of regular patrols conducted in the area.

Since January, law enforcers have confiscated abandoned and illegally cut pine lumbers measuring 2,800 board feet and worth P42,000.

The police, however, said no suspects are arrested since forest patrollers usually arrive at the site late, finding only the abandoned logs.

Tamid-ay added the lack of cellular phone signal in Bokod contributes to the late response of forest patrollers since information on illegal logging activities cannot reach them immediately.

The confiscated logs are turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources while some are still stored in the Bokod police office.
