Benguet SP supports creation of DRRM office
by Susan C. Aro / PIA

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The Benguet Provincial Board  is expected to pass  an ordinance for the creation of a  Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) in the province.

The board members deemed instead of a resolution, an ordinance is more apt for the creation of a DRRMO with necessary funding under the Office of the Provincial Governor.

The committee on finance and appropriations chaired by Board Member Concepcion Balao, which was tasked to review the resolution, recommended that the creation of the DRRMO is necessary as it upholds and promotes the strong commitment of the province in the formulation of policies and plans and the implementation of actions and measures pertaining to disaster preparedness, and mitigation, response, and recovery during disaster operations.

Gov. Nestor Fongwan earlier requested the board to consider the creation of a DRRMO as provided for under Republic Act 10121 or the law strengthening the Philippine disaster risk reduction and management system, providing for the national disaster risk reduction and management framework and institutionalizing the national disaster risk reduction and management plan.

The law states that the “State is mandated to institutionalize the policies, structures, coordination mechanisms, and programs with continuing budget appropriations on disaster risk reduction from the national to the local level towards building a disaster resilient nation and communities.”
