100 nonagenarians receive P10K each
by Julie G. Fianza / PIO

At least a hundred nonagenarians received P10,000 each from the city government through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) during the Elderly Month culminating program, Oct. 25, at the PFVR gym.

The checks were handed out by City Administrator Bonifacio dela Pena, CSWDO head Betty Fangasan, elderly group leader Margaret Tolero, and city councilors.

The nonagenarians who received incentives are World War II veteran Epifanio Besuayan (96), couples Eduardino (93) and Carolina Damatac (93); and Orlando (95) and Basilisa Pimentel (92).

The city has listed 159 qualified nonagenarians, with Ignacia Damasco and Calixto Batiyeg, both 99, as the oldest citizens of the city. Five of them are 98 years old, five are 97, and the rest 96 to 90 years old. Some of them were not able to attend the program.

As stated in the ordinance crafted by Councilor Joel Alangsab, home visits by city officials will be scheduled to hand over the incentive of bedridden nonagenarian honorees.

The cash gift is given with a congratulatory resolution, plaque of appreciation, a regular medical check-up, and a monthly visit by city health officials.

Cash gifts may still be given to qualified nonagenarians during the first quarter of 2020, as birth certificates and other documents attesting to their having attained the age of ninety is accepted for assessment at the CSWDO up to December 2019.

The cash gift is available only to those reaching 90 years old next year.

Upon reaching 100, Baguio centenarians will receive P20,000 from the city government aside from the P100,000 allotted by the national government for centenarians.
