More senior citizens receive P10K check
by Julie G. Fianza / PIO

Thirty elders who reached 90 years old received checks worth P10,000 each from the local government of Baguio.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong handed the checks to the senior citizens last week.

The 30 elders are part of the 44 listed senior citizens who qualified for the cash gift granted by the city through a council resolution.

City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) head Betty Fangasan said the gift represents city city’s appreciation for the nonagenarians’ long life.

Recipients include former Benguet Schools Division Superintendent Hilda Tadaoan, 91,  and a couple aged 95 and 91 who recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

The nonagenarians credit simple living with a happy family, absence of excesses and vices, healthy diet, positive outlook in life, and faith in God as secrets to their long life.

Elders who are bedridden received their checks from social workers. They are also granted medical checkups from the Health Services Office staff.

Giving of checks is expected up the first quarter of 2020 with assessment being done at the CSWDO. Nonagenarians who could present barangay certificates of residency from their barangays, birth certificates, and documents attesting to age, and other requirements may avail of the gift.

Twenty nonagenarians last week received their “longevity” checks from the mayor, with another batch expected in the next weeks.

The first batch of 159 nonagenarians received their gift during the culminating program of elderly month last October.
