City aims to open pool by 3rd quarter of 2019
by Ofelia C. Empian

The city government of Baguio is aiming to open the Athletic Bowl swimming pool by third quarter of this year.

City Sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said the repair of the pool’s walls, frames, bleachers, roof, toilets and shower rooms, among other sections are simultaneously being done.
“Pinagsabay-sabay na lahat ang repair para minsanan ang trabaho,” he said.

Gonzales said even with the onset of the rainy season, the contractor is working to fast-track the rehabilitation and upgrading of the swimming pool, which would be complete with wide screen LED, and touchpad device.

The pool was closed on March 18 to make way for its rehabilitation.

The city aims to meet the standards set by the Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA) or the International Swimming Federation.

The city was able to get a consultant from FINA, who is based in Singapore to provide guidance for the pool’s revamp.

The P43 million-worth upgrading project would provide enclosure at the swimming pool while its shower rooms, locker rooms and toilets would be upgraded. Solar panels would also be installed at the roof.

The swimming pool area would be enclosed to prevent heat loss and minimize the cost of electricity.

The solar panels will supply enough current for the lighting needs as well as the heaters of the pools.

Workers are targeting to make the swimming pool an Olympic-size facility, which is 50 meters.

Gonzales said the swimming pool’s nearby area, which was supposedly for the establishment of a multipurpose building, is also being developed as a temporary activity area for other sports events.

“We might set up a sand court for our beach volleyball games,” he said.
