Councilor wants tailgating of emergency vehicles punished
by Gaby B. Keith / PIO

A city councilor proposed that tailgating of emergency vehicles be penalized to prevent loss of life and limbs and destruction of property arising from the reckless and careless driving.

Councilor Elaine Sembrano proposed an ordinance that seeks to penalize tailgating of ambulances, emergency medical services, fire trucks, and police vehicles.

Tailgating is defined as driving behind emergency vehicles and not leaving sufficient distance for a vehicle in front to stop without colliding with the vehicle following it.

“It has been observed that when an emergency vehicle passes through roads, some drivers take advantage of the situation and tailgate the emergency vehicle and make it appear that they are with the emergency team in order to break conventional traffic rules to reach their destination in the fastest possible time or to avoid traffic, as experienced during long weekends in the city,” the ordinance stated.

The measure imposes a fine of P3,000 on violators. It tasks the Baguio City Police Office to implement its provisions.
